Welcome to Micshariki Africa kaka Kid Rucha. Who is Kid Rucha? What are your government names and what do you do for a living?

Gabriel Gift Omusheni professionally known as “Kid Rucha” is a 25 year old Independent Urban Hip-Hop Artist based in Nairobi, Kenya. He pursued a degree in Telecommunications and Information Engineering at Kenyatta University and graduated in July of 2021. Kid Rucha is a Telecommunications engineer and a musical artist by profession.

Tell us a brief history about yourself. Where were you born and brought up, how was your childhood like and your educational background?

I was born and raised in Nakuru, Kenya. I moved to Nairobi for my studies and to pursue my musical career. My childhood was typically like any other child’s. My older sisters gave me some sought of direction on how to manoeuver through my childhood life. Having schooled in some of the best schools in the county, I was a good student. I scored fairly good grades in both my primary and highschool levels. I proceeded to join Kenyatta University for my degree levels and graduated in July 2021.

How did you get into music? How did your stage name Kid Rucha come about and what does it mean?

My attraction to music began at a young age, influenced by my sisters who were huge fans of RnB Music.

At 12 years old, I developed a liking to rap music. Artists like Nas, Eminem, Jay Z, Biggie, 2Pac, Bamboo and Abbas Kubaff made me fall in love with Rhythm and Poetry. It wasn’t long after, that I began writing rhymes of my own. In 2012, at a high school talent show, I took to the stage to showcase my budding rap skill. I was ranked third amongst a couple of my peers who were also competing. I immediately conceived in my mind that I had a shot at starting a rap career.

It's quite funny where the name “Kid” came from. I remember back in primary school, I had this math teacher, her name was Madam Rose, she used to call me “Baby Goat” every time she came to class. She’d say to me, “How are you my Baby Goat?”

Interestingly, the young one of a goat is called a Kid, and if we look at GOAT to mean, “Greatest Of All Time” then, metaphorically, a Kid is the Young One of a Greatest Of All Time (GOAT).

This is a presage that when I finally grow musically, to reach my pinnacle, I’ll be called ‘The GOAT’, having morphed into one. Rucha is a name I picked up along the way and it means, ‘to praise’. That is how the name ‘Kid Rucha’ came about.

Tell us about musical journey has, how has it been so far and how many projects have you released, what are they called and when were they released? Where are these projects found?

It has been 9 years since I started recording music. Starting out, I didn’t think that it would take this long. My musical journey has been very humbling. From spending money on studio time and music videos to paying for promos and other music related miscellaneous activities, to still not getting anything tangible from all these, this music hustle is indeed not for the faint-hearted. But, we press on, keeping the faith that it is going to pay off very soon.

I have released a couple projects, Eps and Mixtapes, spanning the years of 2016 to 2022. They are all available on all major streaming platforms like YouTube, Spotify, Boomplay, Apple Music, Audiomack, SoundCloud, among others.

What are the pros and cons of using digital streaming apps for you as an artist? Why don’t you sell your music the traditional way i.e. selling CD’s cassettes and soft copies of your music?

The Internet has made the whole world connected. Digital Streaming Platforms are available on the internet for everybody to access. This increases the size of the audience that is likely to engage with your music. This is a huge advantage! Except from the fact that digital streams can be manipulated and the numbers ‘faked’, it is a game changer! Unlike the CDs and Cassettes, which unless you have a huge funding to distribute across the world, you’ll only be limited to selling them locally, to a smaller audience.

What impacts the music that you write and how do you intend to use this God given gift of yours?

My music is about me and the experiences I go through. I like to see it as a documentation of my life in musical form.

The people I interact with, the relationships, my aspirations and endeavors, all influence the music I create.

I intend to use my gift to inspire people to want to put skill into their creations. Also, for the like-minded people who are sharing in the same dream, that they develop the idea that they can use music to manifest things and turn them to reality.

Are you an independent or signed artist? Tell us about G Sonic Studios, what is your relationship with this studio and what do you guys do there?

I am an independent artist. G Sonic Studios was formed in 2017 by myself as the CEO and my good friend, “Senior” as the manager. Aside from managing me, Senior shoots my music videos. At the moment, I am the only artist signed to the ‘label’. We’re yet to complete the full studio set-up so that we can start recording other artists.

What do you do that makes you different to the thousands of Hip Hop artists that are already in the Kenyan and East African market?

I think I am honestly fueled by great Passion for this music thing. This makes me different from, not all, but many Hip Hop artists already in the Kenyan market.

Tell us about your new project Head In The Sky. What is it all about? Who are the producers and artists who worked with you on this album?

“Head In The Sky” is a 14 track album having in it records that won’t bore you to death!

It is my debut album. It comes after a series of Eps and Mixtapes. I announced its release late last year that was in 2021 and since then, I have been recording the songs and I have just recently released the whole body of work.

Head In The Sky is about Purpose, Focus & Attitude.

It could be ascribed to the mentality of an eagle. The eagle has great vision & it’s fearless. The album seems to tell you to have a vision and remain focused in your life no matter the obstacles and challenges you may face.

It is available for streaming on All Digital Platforms.  In the coming weeks, I’ll be availing some hardcopies for sale too. Both CDs and Flash disks with the digital content. They’ll be sold to anyone who’s about supporting the movement.

I had a few collaborations on the album. The artists on the album are my good friends. Nkatha , a talented female vocalist from Nairobi, Hanta The Samurai and  Gold Triggah, two dope rappers from Nairobi and JustJeff, a dope male vocalist from the duo, N.J Music.

Most of the records on the album were produced by Producer Cosmic of Namba Nane Music. I also had Clue Beats produce two records and Producer Wesley of Real Me Records produce three tracks.

How has the album been received and should your fans expect to see you in a concert any time soon?

The reception is good but of course, it could be better. The engagement is slowly picking up and I feel like in time, more people will catch up. I believe that this album will put me on the map. The records on there a really dope!

Apart from being a musician what else do you do get additional income for yourself?

Like I had mentioned, I am an engineering graduate. I work IT at a telecommunications company in Nairobi, Kenya.

What should we expect from you now that your album Head In The Sky is out?

After the album, the plan is to make more music, great music! I know my music is good but, it could be great! The grind never stops. I am looking to do more collaborations with already ‘popping’ artists. I plan to launch ‘G Sonic Studios’ as a label under which I’ll be signed and hopefully put young, promising, artists under my wing.

What can you advice any upcoming artist from your experience as a musician?

Be humble, prayerful, patient and consistent. Do not give up on your dreams. Your time is coming!

Any final thoughts, shouts out that you would like to share with us?

Shout out to Producer Cosmic, to my manager, Hinga aka ‘Senior’, who has been down for me since day one and all my fans and believers, even the non-believers!

Thanks for your time Kid Rucha. We wish you the best with your new and future projects.
