As a hip-hop activist, one thing I have noticed is 2022 is going to be kind of interesting simply because I’m coming across new artists that are doing an amazing job.
Now get introduced to Ulrykah Benard. She is a femcee that I have been listening to for a month now, and admit her style, charisma and bars show that she has a lot on offer for the hip hop culture. Shout out to DJ Cuts Dread of Sherehe Sheria for the introduction.
She’s yet to deliver a full length project and we’ve got everything crossed that we get one in 2022.
Ulrykah is a Kenyan rapper, singer and a song writer based in Washington DC, America. She was born and raised in Kenya did her A-level education at Moi Girls Isinya and later on shifted to the States.
Apart from doing music, she’s is also skilled in matters technology.
I had an opportunity to have an interview with her so that you as a hip-hop/rap fan can get some insights about her.

What’s the inspiration behind your artistic name, Ulryka Benard?
Ulrykah Benard came from the combination of my dad’s last name and a name I found on a popular magazine at the time.
How has your musical journey been like, what got you into rap music?
My love for music was born in the early 80s and I grew up listening to country music, R&B, Old School and a few other genres so having a musical palate that is diverse.
I got inspiration from different sources so I started recently enjoying beats from different beat masters then started to test my ability then here we are. LOL
How long has music been part of your life?
Music has been such a huge part of my life… All my life. I always wake up to music and go to sleep on music.
How did you come to realize that music was the way forward for you?
At some point in my life, I thought to myself, what do I have to lose? Let me share what I’ve written and see what the world thinks.
In what way do you aim to make a difference?
I want to be blessed with the privilege to be an inspiration for others and change the world through music.
I intend on inspiring the world through my music and be in a better position to do charity.
Where is your musical career heading, what’s the vision?
The vision for me would be to be able to share the stage with the greats.
What’s your favorite project so far?
My favorite project so far has been my own transformation from being an individual who would panic in front of people into someone who can’t wait for next show. Self-transformation is a project.
Who are your biggest musical influences especially here in Kenya?
Musical influences include Femi One, Mejja, Khaligraph Jones, Naiboi, Nadia Mukami, ArrowBoy and many more.
What makes you different from other rappers in the industry?
I appreciate everyone’s unique talents and gifts, I do have some similarities with other artist but my own life experiences that shape my music are what make me unique.
Who is your super hero alter ego and why?
I try to stay away from idolizing beyond admiration, so at this time I don’t think I have a superhero alter ego.
Do you have any kooky habits that we should know?
I’m not sure if there are habits I have that are Kooky…LOL. Maybe watching the phone ring because I hate talking on the phone.
Where do you think the future of music industry lies?
The future of music lies in the hands of the listeners, they drive consumption. As artists it’s our role to create new styles and genres but ultimately it’s the listeners who have the last say on what they want to hear

How do you plan to breakthrough in Kenyan market?
I plan to breakthrough into the Kenyan music scene by working with other artists and have their fans get to know me too.
You are a Kenyan rapper based in the states, what do you think makes America’s and Kenyan music scene different?
Living in America gives unique experiences that people living in Kenya might not identify with. I want to fill the gap between the two and I’m hoping that Kenyan listeners will appreciate the style in which I deliver… with all the diversity in Kenya we all don’t need to be doing the same style of music.
What’s next for Ulrykah?
I have a few songs and music videos I’m working on and I’ll be looking into other ventures as well.
Word of advice to the upcoming who are trying real hard to a point they just want give up?
If you are ever tempted to give up… don’t! So many people draw inspiration from you even if they don’t show it on social media… don’t give up!
